We Miss You, Jack

Today the news broke that a by-election has been called for Jack Layton's riding (the Danforth). Jack held that seat for 7 years before his death this past summer. I still remember the shock of reading that he actually died. I really felt as if he were a part of my family, taken prematurely and before he could fulfill his political potential. I went to the memorial with my friend and we paid our respects. It was amazing to see how many people were inspired by Jack and cared about him.

Jack dreamed of a Canada where everyone was treated with respect. He pushed for higher representation of women and politics. And he did everything in his power to make new Canadians feel welcome.

I hope law professor Craig Scott maintains Jack's seat during this by-election. As Torontonians continue to live under the wrath of uber-conservative Mayor Ford, we can only hope to keep this seat as a reminder of everything Jack stood for.

RIP Jack, the best prime minister Canada never had. I'll never forget your message: Peace, Love, Optimism Forever.
