The world has been a harsh and cruel place in the past few weeks if you have been following the news. Cruise ships are sinking, nuclear war with Iran is apparently imminent (or Fox News would say so), and 11 Peruvian migrant workers have been killed in a car accident outside of Stratford. But there is one story that gives hope that the world isn't gone completely to the dumps.
The 9th Circuit Court ruled that California's referendum "Proposition 8" (which banned gay/lesbian marriage) was unconstitutional. The ruling actually states: "Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California". The reversal of Prop 8 means that it isn't crazy to believe that two people that love each other should be treated equally under the law and share the same rights as everyone else.
Unfortunately, not everyone is happy to see Prop 8 reversed. It is speculated that the case will go to the Supreme Court. Also, the same crew of haters seem to have it out for Ellen. Last week, JC Penney announced that Ellen Degeneres will be their new spokeswoman. Seems like a good fit, right? Not if you ask the anti-gay group "One Million Moms". They are calling for JC Penney to fire Ellen, solely because she is gay. I'm fairly sure that's the most clear cut example of discrimination and bigotry I've ever heard.
"One Million Moms" states: "Funny that J.C. Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families, The majority of J.C. Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there."
Sorry "One Million Moms", but your plan to get Ellen Degeneres fired seems to be backfiring. I guess they forgot that 3 million viewers tune into Ellen's show per episode. JC Penney has stated that they are standing behind Ellen with no intention of firing her. Also, most of the press covering this story just makes the online super-conservative group seem like a bunch of ignorant close-minded bigots. Ellen and JC Penney will continue to make millions of dollars, and Ellen's loyal fans will not be easily persuaded into homophobia.
