A week ago last Tuesday, the nominations were released for the 84th Annual Academy Awards. I must admit, The Oscars are one of the only exciting events to brighten up the long Canadian winter. Unfortunately, I will be on a plane while the Oscars air live this year. But that doesn't mean I won't tape them and make it my personal mission to watch every movie nominated.
Of course, my favourite category (besides Best Picture) is the Feature Length Documentary category. And the 2012 nominees are.... (drumroll please):
"Hell and Back Again" Danfung Dennis and Mike Lerner
"If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front" Marshall Curry and Sam Cullman
"Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs
"Pina" Wim Wenders and Gian-Piero Ringel
"Undefeated" TJ Martin, Dan Lindsay and Richard Middlemas
In the upcoming weeks, I will be featuring my review of all of these films as I make my way down the list. In the past, I have had some trouble finding some docs but I will do my best. The usually get easier to find once oscar starts buzzing.
I am most excited to see "If a Tree Falls" which is about the Earth Liberation Front, a group of anarchists or "militant environmentalists" or terrorists, depending on who you ask. Looks really cool and looks like it shows the complexity of these people, their beliefs and the consequences of their actions.
Also just a heads up, but the Oscar nominated doc "Undefeated" is about an inner city football team. NOT to be confused with another 2011 documentary called "The Undefeated", which is essentially pro-Sarah Palin propaganda against the "leftwing media". So don't make the mistake I did and watch the wrong trailer and wonder how the heck a promo piece for Palin got nominated. Don't worry! It didn't.
I've linked all the titles of the above movies to their trailers. Check them out!
